ANNEALING EFFECT ON MAGNETIC-PROPERTIES OF THE LI2O-B2O3-FE2O3 SYSTEM

An homogeneous Li2O-B2O3-Fe2O3 glass containing 8% Fe2O3 is prepared by ultra-fast quenching technique and it is shown that the magnetic spinel lithium ferrite (LiFe5O8) can be obtained within a glassy matrix when the glass is heat-treated. The identity of the crystalline phase is established by means of X-ray diffraction and by magnetization measurements. It is shown that the grain size and hence the magnetic properties of the obtained glass ceramics can be controlled by means of the annealing temperature. We obtained vitroceramics containing Li ferrite crystals with an average size of 35-495 angstrom for annealings in the temperature range 440-770-degrees-C.
