SINGLE-PARTICLE CONFINEMENT STUDIES IN A RADIO-FREQUENCY-SUPPLEMENTED MAGNETIC MIRROR

摘要
An experimental study of electron confinement in magnetic mirror geometry supplemented with rf quasipotential barriers yields confinement times which appear to be a function of gas scattering only. Under minimum scattering conditions (p ≈ 5 X 10-8 Torr), 10-20-eV electrons are observed to undergo several thousand reflections before loss occurs. The magnitude of the quasipotentials and the conditions for onset of nonadiabatic particle behavior are found to be in good agreement with existing theory.
