MAGNETIC-RESONANCE STUDIES OF PHOTO-CHEMICAL HYDROGEN ABSTRACTION IN AROMATIC SINGLE-CRYSTALS

ESR and optical nuclear polarization (ONP) data are evaluated in order to characterize the radical pair triplet state resulting from a photochemical hydrogen transfer reaction in doped fluorene single crystals. The product is formed when a hydrogen is abstracted from the acidic CH2 group of a fluorene host molecule by an optically excited state of acceptor molecules like phenazine, acridine, and anthracene. The observed zero field splitting and hyperfine tensors can be interpreted in terms of a detailed molecular structure of the hydrogen transfer product which provides a proper basis for further studies concerning reaction dynamics. © 1979 American Chemical Society.
