Phosphatidylcholines, typical phospholipids, have been successfully prepared from anhydrous L- alpha -glycerophosphorylcholine (GPC) and carboxylic anhydrides by using 4-N,N-dimethylaminopyridine or polymer-supported aminopyridines as catalyst. The use of the supported catalyst results in the easy separation of phosphatidylcholines from the reaction mixture. However, anhydrous GPC is usually provided as a cadmium complex. It is, therefore, necessary to remove the cadmium salt on the separation of the phospholipids. The authors report on the synthesis of a phosphatidylcholine from cadmium-free GPC using aminopyridine catalyst supported onto macroporous polystyrene resins. It is shown that the procedure for using cadmium-free GPC impregnated onto the macroporous aminopyridine catalyst is attractive for the preparation of synthetic phospholipids, because the phospholipids can be simply isolated from the reaction mixture. 8 Refs.
