摘要
The modified sol-gel processing technique of free casting provides an attractive route for preparation of low-shrink ceramic monoliths. Sols based on colloidal silica can be rapidly cooled and retain their frozen structure after warming to ambient temperatures. Owing to the large pore size in the gels, cracking is avoided during drying. A selection of silica sols has been examined and the state of aggregation of the particles was established as a critical parameter in determining whether sols can be processed in this way.
