EFFECT OF A HETEROLOGOUS ANTILYMPHOCYTE SERUM ON EXPERIMENTAL ALLERGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS

The effect of a heterologous rabbit anti-lymphocyte serum (ALS) on the experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was tested in Sprague Dawley rats: EAE could be completely suppressed if ALS was given either before, simultaneously with, or after sensitization in all animals. The paralysis already developed could be abolished by ALS in 90%. In comparison to other common immunosuppressive agents, the strong effect of ALS after the manifestation of the autoimmune disease as well as the possible sites of action of ALS during the pathogenesis of EAE are finally discussed. © 1969 Springer-Verlag.
