CORRELATION BETWEEN GROSS APPEARANCE AND HISTOLOGIC-FINDINGS IN THE POST-OPERATIVE STOMACH

Among 50 postoperative stomachs examined endoscopically, there were 13 cases showing a pattern of linear erythematous streaks radiating from the stoma. Biopsy sections obtained under direct vision from the erythematous streaks disclosed more significant histologic changes than those taken from the intervening pale areas. The finding of reparative changes was the most reliable criterion for differentiating the degree of change in the 2 areas. The topography of gastritis in the postoperative stomach suggests that mechanical factors may be important in the pathogenesis of reflux gastritis. © 1979, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
