Random-organized copolymers based on phenylene and thienylene units have been prepared. Continuous molar ratios of monomers from 4:1 to 1:4 were taken to obtain products of copolymerization. The compositions of both co-mers in copolymers were nearly the same as in the starting mixture of monomers (detected by IR and ELS spectroscopy). NMR spectra (1H and 13C-CP/MAS) were used to characterize the chemical structure of the copolymers. Crystallinity and crystallite size perpendicular to the (110) plane decreased as the content of thiophene units in the copolymers increased (X-ray and electron diffraction methods). D.c. conductivities were measured for undoped and iodine-doped copolymers. For an iodine vapour pressure of 10 Torr the conductivity of the samples increased more than 5 orders of magnitude, but the highest gain of conductivity after doping was for copolymers with near equimolar ratios of two mers. © 1990.
