Glass electrodes behaving as protodes or alkali cation electrodes in aqueous systems respond to the protonated solvent in liquid ammonia at — 38°C and can be used to measure the activity of NH4+. Deviations in the response to the activity of NH4+ are shown to be due to an alkali metal function (alkaline error) of the glass electrodes. The selectivity of glass electrodes for different alkali metal cations changes drastically from water to liquid ammonia. Copyright © 1969 Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
