CONTAMINANT TRANSPORT IN LAYERED POROUS-MEDIA .2. APPLICATIONS

In a companion paper, analytical solutions describing the fate of a solute in a layered aquifer system are given. In the study presented here, these closed form solutions are utilized in solution of several problems of relevance to layered aquifer analysis. Initially, the example problems discussed here are primarily chosen for the purpose of verification of some of these analytical solutions. These applications are later extended to other aquifer-aquitard configurations, to demonstrate the range of problems that may be analyzed using these procedures. Thus, in this sense, the problems discussed here cover only a sample of cases which may be studied utilizing the solutions developed earlier. In the examples discussed here, the importance of advective transport in the vertical direction is emphasized for contaminant transport analysis in a layered system.
