SKIPPING MOTION AND ADSORPTION OF LOW VELOCITY (V LESS-THAN VFERMI) IONS ON METAL-SURFACES

We have studied the scattering of 50-200 eV Na+ and K+ beams and 200-2000 eV Si+ beams from Cu(111) under angles of incidence from 1 to 20°, and 100 to 3000 eV beams of O2+ from Ag(111) under 5° incidence of the beam to the surface. The O2+-Ag(111) system exhibits near-perfect perpendicular energy scaling for O2- formation. At the other extreme, the Na+ and K+-Cu(111) systems exhibit strong coupling of the momentum components of the beam perpendicular and parallel to the surface. Such coupling also exists for the Si+-Cu(111) interaction. Furthermore, the Si+ beam is clearly trapped in a transient bound state for up to 5 vibrations. We speculate that the coupling processes responsible for these effects may also be important for adsorption and reaction at thermal energies. © 1990 Pergamon Press plc.
