摘要
Impulse radar testing is an increasingly used diagnostic tool on non-metallic structures and non-metallic components of structures, and interest in this technique is growing rapidly worldwide. The different types of radar system in use are outlined together with the operational and theoretical principles behind the technique. In addition, a simulated case history on a masonry arch bridge illustrates how such systems respond to transmission through a multi-layer medium. The advantages of radar are shown to be: rates of testing are rapid; no scarring or marking couplant is required; the radar pulse will propagate through air. The disadvantages of radar are shown to be: systems are expensive to purchase; skilled operators are required; radar waves will not propagate through metallic materials. The complementary nature of radar testing with other non-destructive testing (NDT) methods is highlighted and reinforced.
