REALISTIC LASER COOLING THEORY FOR MULTISTATE ATOMS

摘要
A laser cooling theory based on expansion of the atomic density operator in photon momentum is presented for an arbitrary multi-state atom. Langevin equation simulations of the three-dimensional optical molasses yield sub-Doppler limit temperatures in quantitative agreement with experiments, but also bring out unexpected features such as non-gaussian and anisotropic velocity distributions.
