CONFINEMENT VIA DYNAMIC MONOPOLES

It is known that an SU(N) lattice gauge theory can be exactly mapped into a Z(N) gauge theory coupled to dynamical monopoles, with couplings and monopole distributions determined by the SU(N)/Z(N) dynamics. The effect of the monopoles on long-distance behavior is discussed for N = 2. Rigorous inequalities are derived that reduce the problem of confinement at large beta to estimates on expectations of monopole currents. The manner in which this can lead to permanent confinement for space-time dim d less-than-or-equal-to 4 is discussed.
