Histochemical and biochemical methods have been used to investigate the amount and distribution of β-glucuronidase in rabbit and guinea pig gallbladder. The enzyme, which is present in high concentration, is found in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells. Significant species and sex differences in the amount of enzyme present occur. The possible functional significance of the enzyme in mitosis, electrolyte metabolism, and bilirubin transport is discussed. © 1968 Hoeber Medical Division • Harper & Row, Publishers, Incorporated.
