TESTING OF BLOOD FOR ANTIBODIES TO HEPATITIS-C VIRUS - IMPLICATIONS FOR PLASMA POOLS USED IN THE PREPARATION OF BLOOD PRODUCTS - MEETING AT NIBSC, 4 DECEMBER 1990

Several countries have introduced screening of blood donations for antibodies to hepatitis C to reduce the risk of transmission of hepatitis following blood transfusion. The implications of such a policy for blood products manufactured from large pools of plasma derived from blood donations or plasma-pheresis donors were discussed at a meeting at NIBSC on 4 December 1990. The nature of the virus, the epidemiology of the disease and the status of the tests were reviewed before discussion of the courses of action that could be taken with respect to blood products such as immunoglobulins, clotting factors and albumin. © 1991.
