Rice straw has been analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after biodelignification by the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium and the brown-rot fungus Polyporus ostreiformis. The overall chemical changes in straw due to fungal attack has been determined semi-quantitatively, from the changes in some chemical groups attached to carbon, as revealed by the C1s and O1s spectra. The loss of lignin and polysaccharides of straw owing to fungal degradation (as determined by chemical analyses), could be correlated with the XPS data. The data indicate that the technique may be used for rapid characterization of biodegraded lignocellulosic materials.
