ABSTRACT: CNS stimulants such as methylphenidate and pentylenetetrazol are currently prescribed for the treatment of aged persons with symptoms of senility. A review of clinical studies conducted with these compounds indicates that firm evidence of efficacy is lacking. Because of the risks associated with high doses of such stimulants in the aged, it would seem that these compounds are of limited utility in geriatric psychiatry. 1979 The American Geriatrics Society
