摘要
Stimulated Brillouin scattering transverse to the laser beam, external to the laser cavity and free from frequency-dependent feedback, has been studied using a specially designed laser. The laser beam is focused by a cylindrical lens so that the direction of maximum gain is transverse to the beam. The hypersonic velocities of several liquids have been measured at high power levels without frequency-pulling effects. Transverse filaments have been observed, and an approximate measurement of the power contained in a single filament has been obtained. A stimulated anti-Stokes scattering in benzene has also been observed, which has a 200-MHz frequency shift. This scattering is tentatively identified as stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering. © 1968 The American Physical Society.
