摘要
Chlorination of polystyrene has been carried out in solution (CCl4) in the dark with SnCl4 as catalyst at 2.5-degrees-C. Macro and microstructures of the chlorinated polystyrene have been established by X-ray methods, FTIR, NMR (H-1, C-13, DEPT) spectroscopy. Chlorinated polystyrene is less crystalline than polystyrene. FTIR and NMR spectra show two types of substitution, viz. aliphatic substitution in the methylene group and principally aromatic substitution at C2 and C4. We have established the proportions of the various structural units in the chlorinated polymers.
