CONTROLLING MECHANISMS IN SELECTIVE OXIDATION OF TOLUENE TO BENZALDEHYDE

摘要
Using a selective catalyst consisting of molybdenum oxide doped with tungstic oxide on alumina, the kinetics of the vapour-phase oxidation of toluene by air has been studied. The oxidation has been shown to proceed according to parallel model (toluene å benzaldehyde, and toluene → CO2). The overall oxidation reaction as well as the main reaction leading to benzaldehyde formation appear to exhibit a shift in the controlling regime from chemical to diffusional control around 475°C. This shift has been observed by non-linear estimation of the activation energy by a reparameterised form of the Arrhenius equation, but more experimental work at higher temperatures is required to confirm it. © 1969.
