STRONG DECREASE OF ANISOTROPY BY LEAD-SUBSTITUTION IN Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y

The in-plane (rho(ab)) and out-of-plane (rho(c))(c) resistivities have been measured above Tc, in several lead-substituted single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y and compared to the results obtained for lead-free samples. We have found that the lead substitution induces an important decrease of rho(c) resulting in a lowering of the anisotropy rho(c)/rho(ab) by two orders of magnitude near Tc. Moreover we have found that rho(c) changes its behavior from a semiconducting type of behavior to a metallic one. We relate these results to the role of lead, which was recently infered from structural considerations. We discuss of the possibility to improve the out-of-plane critical current by lead substitution.
