The reaction between active hydrogen and Cl-2. Evidence for the participation of vibrationally excited H-2

Coupled discharge-flow system, T. O. F. mass spectrometer observations of the mass 2 peak in the active H-2/Cl-2 system showed unexpected consumption of some hydrogen. This is suggested to arise from the reaction Cl+ H-2 = HCl + Cl, enhanced in rate by H-2 vibrational excitation. Evidence for similar participation of excited H-2 in other systems is presented. Rate constants are determined at 300 degrees K for the reactions H+Cl-2 and H + Cl-2 of (3.5 +/- 1.2) x 10(-11) and (1.2 +/- 0.5) x 10(-11) cm(3)molecule(-1) sec(-1), respectively.
