Sodium, potassium, and calcium content, as well as calcium fluxes, were studied in HeLa cells after adriamycin treatment. Sodium and calcium concentrations increased, and the K/Na ratio was altered. The distribution of intracellular calcium was determined by kinetic analysis of 45Ca fluxes, and the influence of adriamycin on calcium transport was consistent with an enhanced membrane permeability to calcium (increased rate constant of the fast phase) and a net increase in the total intracellular exchangeable calcium pool. The latter evidence was supported by the fact that calcium influx was not modified by different calcium concentrations in the incubation media. © 1979 The Italian Pharmacological Society.
