REACTIVITY PATTERNS FOR MU-ETA-1-ETA-2-ALLENYL COMPLEXES - A NOVEL SYNTHETIC ROUTE TO DIMETALLACYCLOPENTANES AND DIMETALLACYCLOPENTENES VIA REGIOSPECIFIC ADDITIONS OF CARBON, NITROGEN, AND PHOSPHORUS NUCLEOPHILES TO RU2(CO)6(MU-ETA-1-ETA-2-PHC=C=CH2)(MU-PPH2)

Reaction of the bimetallic allenyl complex Ru2(CO)6(mu-eta-1:eta-2-PhC = C = CH2)(mu-PPh2) (1) with H2NR (R = Et, n-Pr, Cy), PR2R' (R = Cy, R' = H; R = R' = OEt), or t-BuNC results in exclusive attack at the beta-carbon atom, forming the novel zwitterionic dimetallacyclopentane and dimetallacyclopentene derivatives Ru2-(CO)6[mu-eta-1:eta-1-PhHC-C(HNR)-CH2](mu-PPh2) (2a-c), Ru2(CO)6[mu-eta-1:eta-1-PhC = C(PR2R')-CH2](mu-PPh2) (3a,b), and Ru2(CO)6[mu-eta-1:eta-1-PhC = C(CN-t-Bu)CH2](mu-PPh2) (4). The isonitrile adduct reacts smoothly with either H2NEt or EtSH to give Ru2(CO)6[mu-eta-1:eta-1-PhC = C{C(EtNH)N(H-t-Bu)}-CH2](mu-PPh2) (5) or Ru2(CO)6[mu-eta-1:eta-1-PhC = C{C-(EtS)N(H-t-Bu)}-CH2](mu-PPh2) (6). Compounds 2a, 3a, and 5 have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. EHMO calculations indicate that the observed reactivity is under charge and orbital control.
