A method is presented of preparing platinum particles (radii 1-3 nm) by the reduction of H2PtCl6 with NaBH4 in an aqueous acidic host dispersion of high aspect ratio inorganic (imogolite) fibers. The fibers appear to be effective stabilizers for the platinum particles, which settle in the absence of imogolite as large aggregates. This influence of the fibers is examined and explained, details of the syntheses of imogolite and platinum are discussed, and possible applications of the imogolite-platinum dispersions for catalysis are indicated.
