VARIATIONS IN EXPERIMENTAL CARCINOGENESIS OF SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND IN 3 STRAINS OF RATS

Strain-specific responses to a carcinogen were studied in 90-day old male Wistar, Sprague-Dawley and Long-Evans rats. Pellets of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene were implanted in the right submandibular glands of 16 rats of each of the above strains, and responses were studied histologically for latency, susceptibility and specific tumor types. Epidermoid carcinomas, or stages which characteristically precede their formation, were observed in all animals. Microscopic study revealed that while all tumors were essentially similar in the 3 strains the Long-Evans rats developed carcinoma 3 weeks earlier than the Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats. © 1969.
