IDENTIFICATION OF MAGNETOCRYSTALLINE AND MAGNETOELASTIC ANISOTROPY CONTRIBUTIONS IN ULTRATHIN EPITAXIAL CO(11O) FILMS

Magnetic anisotropies of MBE-grown fee Co(110) films with thicknesses between 8 and 110 Angstrom on Cu(110) single-crystal substrates have been determined by Brillouin light scattering and have been correlated with structural properties. Three regimes of film growth and associated anisotropy behavior are identified: coherent growth, in-plane anisotropic and isotropic strain relaxation. The magnetocrystalline bulk anisotropy contribution with easy axes along the in-plane [111] direction is found to be largely suppressed for film thicknesses smaller than (50 +/- 10) Angstrom.
