This paper describes the results obtained from a pilot plant research into the reduction of ammonia emission from pig houses. The slurry of 240 fattening pigs was separated and treated aerobically, thus providing ammonia free liquid. The liquid was used as recirculation water to remove fresh slurry from the pig house. Three systems for removing the slurry were tested. In two of these systems the fresh slurry was diluted by collecting it in a layer of recirculation (flushing) liquid. The diluted slurry was removed from the pig house 1 to 4 times per day. The ammonia emissions from the three pig units with the slurry removal systems were compared with the emissions from two control units. The results show a maximum reduction of ammonia emission from the treated units of 70% compared to the control unit with fully slatted floors, measured over a period of 280 days. No differences were measured in the performances of the animals.
