Temperature data obtained during winter 1975/76 above southern Spain from rocket and satellite measurements are analysed at several altitude levels from the ground up to the lower thermosphere. Wavelike structures in time as well as in the vertical direction are found. They correlate with other atmospheric parameters, namely, pressure, electron density, and 5577 Å emission. Winter anomaly activity appears to be affected by these temperature variations. However, something else (a 'co-factor') must be assumed in addition to high temperatures to explain the occurrence of winter anomaly events. Correlation of winter anomaly and temperature appears to be different above Spain and northern Germany. © 1979.
