O'farrell P. N. and Hitchens D. M. (1990) Producer services and regional development: key conceptual issues of taxonomy and quality measurement, Reg. Studies 24,163-171. There is a major research gap with regard to our understanding of the effectiveness of producer services in promoting the efficiency of manufacturing enterprises in regional economies. This paper reviews alternative taxonomic methodologies ofthe service sector and compares the nature of services and manufactured goods. The paper also attempts to develop methodologies to test the effectiveness of producer services in promoting the efficiency of manufacturing firms in peripheral areas by measuring the utility of service inputs and by evaluating the quality of producer service firm outputs. © 1990, Regional Studies Association.
