摘要
Scaling or self-similarity is an important issue which has attracted considerable attention and has particularly inspired a certain trend in rainfall modeling. We clarify the implication, with respect to self-similarity, of the facts that the probability of rain tends to increase with the size of the area of observation and that the distribution of rain rate contains an atom at zero. These properties observed in precipitation processes lead to subtle difficulties which are not compatible with self-similarity.
