摘要
Mean annual temperature (T) and mean annual range of temperature (A) closely delineate the thermal field that circumscribes the distribution of modern plant communities. The data provide a reliable measure of paleotemperature for Tertiary floras whose composition corresponds to living communities. Previous studies of Tertiary floras in the western United States show a rather regular trend toward lowered temperature and greater extremes with diminishing age. Although some investigators have superimposed major temperature fluctuations] on that trend, those irregularities appear to reflect no more than regional temperature differences stemming from various geographic factors, as well as imprecise temperature criteria selected to estimate paleotemperature. © 1969.
