DEHYDROGENATION OF CYCLOHEXENE, 1,3-CYCLOHEXADIENE AND 1,4-CYCLOHEXADIENE TO BENZENE ON SI(111)7 X 7

摘要
The adsorption of a series of six-membered cyclic hydrocarbons including benzene, 1,3- and 1,4-cyclohexadiene and cyclohexene on clean and modified Si(111)7 x 7 surfaces has been studied using thermal desorption spectrometry. Room-temperature adsorption of these molecules on clean and sputtered Si(111)7 x 7 surfaces was found. In particular, two molecular desorption states (at 350 and at 430 K) were observed for benzene. Evidence of benzene formation by a dehydrogenation surface reaction, with at least three benzene evolution states (at approximately 350 K, between 400 and 500 K and at approximately 550 K), was found for the thermal desorption of cyclohexene, 1,3- and 1,4-cyclohexadiene. The room-temperature adsorption of these olefins appeared to be a crucial precursor step for the dehydrogenation surface reaction. Possible bonding geometries for these adsorption states were proposed. As well, the extent of the surface catalytic reforming property of Si(111)7 x 7 and amorphous Si was investigated.
