摘要
1. The Koschewnikow glands (KG) of honeybee queens are composed of type III glandular units; secretions are emitted from ducts that open onto the entire surface of the intersegmental membrane. 2. Secretory activity is characterized by the appearance of dense granules containing mainly glycoproteins, stained by periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate, extracted by pronase. In one-year-old mated queens, the gland degenerates. Secretory products originating from mitochondria are likely to be only carriers of pheromonal compounds. 3. Topical treatment of worker bees ("pseudoqueens") with EtOH extracts of queen Koschewnikow glands induced typical queen balling behaviour in workers of a bee colony. 4. Twenty-eight compounds including acids, alcohols, alkanes and alkenes (C8H16-C43H88) were characterized by gas liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in queen KG extract. None of them is present in worker alarm pheromone which is secreted from worker KG.
