MODIFICATION OF SMOKING BEHAVIOR - AN EVALUATIVE REVIEW

Considers the nature of the problem posed by cigarette smoking, and the means by which its modification is attempted. It is obvious that the problem is a major one and that there is a real need for the development of reliable modification techniques for use with individuals who wish to discontinue smoking. The theoretical underpinnings of most smoking-modification research are inadequate because they are not capable of generating treatment techniques which can validate or invalidate them. The design and methodology employed in most smoking-modification research is so poor that the data generated are not meaningful. A crucial aspect of the problem the need for long-term maintenance of nonsmoking is largely ignored, hence, much current research is following a directionless or circular course. Recommendations for upgrading research, both in terms of design and methodology, are made in the hope that the present state of knowledge with respect to the modification of smoking behavior can begin to expand.
