After carotid compression, direct measurement of the ophthalmic and brachial artery pressures showed: 1. 1. In patients with no carotid lesions, hypotension occurred in the homolateral ophthalmic artery and in the homolateral intraocular pressure. Only a concomitant reaction of the carotid sinus reflex modified the contralateral ophthalmic and brachial artery pressure. 2. 2. This technique detected minute degrees of cross circulation. 3. 3. When occlusion of the internal carotid was total, even in the presence of cross circulation, the main ophthalmic artery was supplied with blood by the homolateral common carotid via the external carotid. 4. 4. The importance of the sinus reflex in interpreting the results of carotid compression tests and the repercussion of these tests on the intraocular pressure are discussed. © 1969.
