LEVITATION-FORCE MEASUREMENTS AND FIELD-MAPPING OF MELT-PROCESSED YBA2CU3O7-X CERAMICS

YBa2Cu3O7-x ceramics were produced by a melt-textured growth (MTG) process. They consist of large grains of 2-5 mm diameter with micron-sized Y-211 inclusions as analyzed by optical and electron microscopy (SEM/EDX). Their J(C) was determined by an inductive method to be in the range of 2000 A/cm(2). A 3D positioning system was built to measure the levitation force of a permanent magnet above these ceramic superconductors as a function of distance and the relative position on the sample surface using force sensors. The magnetic stiffness was compared for sintered and MTG samples. The latter shows a much stronger dependence of the stiffness on the magnetic field. In addition the trapped-flux distribution mapped by means of a Hall sensor reveals clearly the grain structure of the MTG sample.
