1. 1. The average resting metabolic rate (RMR) of young adult degus (Octodon degus) is 1257 ml O2/kg/hr. No differences exist between male and female animals. 2. 2. RMR is a function of body mass as described by the equation RMR = 19.5 W0.46 in which metabolic rate is expressed in ml O2/hr and W is body weight in g. 3. 3. Thyroxine elevates the metabolic rate of degus 18% within 15-35 min after injection. Such an immediate effect has not been described in other rodents. 4. 4. The metabolic effect of thyroxine is abolished if degus are pretreated with propanolol, suggesting that the hormone acts through B receptors. © 1979.
