Breaking stresses and strains have been measured for sheets of a brittle elastic material, a highly crosslinked polyisoprene rubber, under three different modes of deformation: simple tension, pure shear, and equi-biaxial extension. Sharp cracks, about 2 mm long, were made in the centre of each specimen before testing. The breaking stress for equi-biaxial straining was found to be significantly higher than for uniaxial straining while the breaking strain was about one-half as large. All of the results are in accord with a single value of the fracture energy, about 150 J m-2.
