Under certain conditions it proved possible to obtain reproducible measueres of changes in cerebral oxygen availability, aO2, when using open‐ended polarographic electrodes.In anaesthetized cats and rabbits a relationship was found to exist between the blood pressure changes produced by noradrenaline, acetylcholine and hexamethonium, and their effect on cerebral aO2.However, the decrease in cerebral aO2 produced by acetylcholine and bexamethonium was normalized long before the blood pressure was normal.In addition, the increase in aO2 produced by adrenaline was always smaller than that produced by an equihypertensive dose of noradrenaline.This difference may be due to the fact that adrenaline also increases the cerebral oxygen consumption.Potassium cyanide increased cerebral aO2 without significantly affecting the blood pressure. © 1968 Scandinavian Physiological Society
