CHLOROFORM EXTRACTION AND POLYMERIZATION OF TETRAPHENYLARSONIUM CHLORIDE

Measurements of the distribution of tetraphenylarsonium chloride between aqueous sodium chloride solutions and chloroform give an ionization constant, K°, =0.079 and a partition constant (CHCL3/H2O), P°, =3.3 for monomeric (C6H5)4AsCI at 25°. Distribution measurements at higher tetraphenylarsonium chloride concentrations show that polymerization occurs in chloroform. A system consisting of monomer, dimer and tetramer best represents the extraction data, which furnish the polymerization constants β2=163±I6, β4=4.5 ·105± 0.9·105. Vapor pressure measurements of dry chloroform solutions give the values β2=72 ± 14, β4 =4.0· l05 ±0.7·105 (25°). © 1969.
