NA-23 RELAXATION IN DNA SOLUTIONS - INFLUENCE OF INTERCALATION ON CORRELATION TIMES AND QUADRUPOLAR COUPLING-CONSTANTS

The longitudinal and transversal NMR relaxations of Na-23+ in calf thymus NaDNA solutions have been examined as a function of both DNA and Na+ concentration. The results are analyzed by combined use of a two-state distribution model and a two-step model for the relaxation of Na-23. It is shown that both concentration dependencies are mainly due to changes in the slow modulation of the quadrupolar interaction. Likewise, the effect of intercalation in DNA on the relaxation of Na-23+ has been examined. It is shown that the intercalation process mainly effects the part of the spectral density function describing the contribution of the fast modulations to the relaxation. On the basis of this result, a discussion of the applicability of Na-23 NMR relaxation measurements in the study of intercalation is given.
