Administered a word-association test and a similarity-judgments test to 33 high school Ss before and after instruction in Newtonian Mechanics. Structural similarity among concepts in mechanics was related to both associative and judged similarity. Frequency of cooccurrence of concept words in sentences in Ss' textbook was not related to the similarity measures. An interpretation of the role of these similarities in the acquisition and understanding of physics concepts is suggested. (25 ref.)
