Irritable bowel syndrome is a heterogeneous condition of varying symptomatology and severity. Hypnotherapy and dynamic psychotherapy are effective treatments for refractory irritable bowel syndrome. Psychotherapy is more suitable for patients with overt psychological symptoms. Other psychological interventions require further research before their efficacy can be established.
