In a study of forty patients with wound dehiscence and of a control group, transverse incisions and retention sutures were found to exert a protective effect. Distention with vomiting and pulmonary complications occurred almost invariably in patients in whom dehiscence later developed. Infection was present in a large majority of the dehisced wounds and is thought to be contributory to this complication by interfering with normal wound healing. © 1968.
