摘要：

The 2**N** minus **1 fold multiplicity of solutions found by D. Boley and G. H. Golub in their study of the inverse problem for N multiplied by N symmetric, pentadiagonal matrices contrasts with the unicity of the solution of the inverse problem for an inhomogeneous, discrete beam. The reason for this discrepancy is elucidated and can be traced to the different properties of the spectral data used in the two cases.
