MAGNETIZATION BEHAVIOR OF RCU(2)SI(2) (R=TB, DY, HO, ER AND TM) IN THE PARAMAGNETIC STATE

The result of Dc magnetization (M) measurements on the compounds RCu(2)Si(2) (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm) in the paramagnetic state up to 55 kOe are reported. In all cases, except that of Gd alloy, M is found to be a non-linear function of magnetic field tending to saturate at higher fields over a wide temperature range in the paramagnetic state. This magnetization behaviour is found to be essentially a single-ionic effect, presumably arising from strong 4f quadrupolar effects.
