DISAPPEARANCE OF THE COULOMB CHARGING ENERGY AND LOW-TEMPERATURE RESISTIVITY OF GRANULAR METALS

摘要
We argue that for granular metals a small fraction of the granules become charged because the quantum kinetic energy can be lowered by transferring an electron from a small grain to a larger grain. Even though some Coulomb potential energy may be lost, this will be feasible if the size difference is big enough. At a sufficiently low temperature, transport due to the electrons on the charged grains needs to overcome a much smaller activation barrier and will thus dominate. When this effect is incorporated in a variable-range-hopping picture for the conductivity, a different temperature dependence is found, which is in qualitative agreement with the recent experimentally determined T dependence of granular metals on the insulating side at low temperatures.
