METAL ION-AROMATIC COMPLEXES .24. SYNTHESIS AND CRYSTAL-STRUCTURE OF CHLORO(PI-ARYL)TIN(II) TETRACHLOROALUMINATE CONTAINING THE SN2CL22+ MOIETY

The compounds π-ArClSn(AlCl4) in which Ar=p-(CH3)2QH4 (I) or C6H6 (II) have been prepared and their crystal structures determined. Both structures contain the Sn2Cl22+ dimeric unit as an integral feature. The crystal structures are composed of these dimers interconnected by bridging A1C14~ groups to form infinite-chain structures in the [001] directions. The Sn-Cl distances in the dimer are approximately 2.6 Å (an expected Sn2+-Cl single-bond distance). The coordination polyhedron of Sn2+ is completed by interactions with adjacent A1C14- groups and an interaction with the π orbitals of the aromatic moiety to give a distorted octahedron. The Sn2+ lies on the line perpendicular to the aromatic ring and passing through its center with approximately equal Sn-C bond distances. The Sn-C and Sn-Cl bonding is discussed relative to π-C6H6Sn(AlCl4)2 C6H6. Both structures were refined by full-matrix least squares using diffractometer data with anisotropic temperature factors, and anomalous dispersion corrections for Sn, Al, and Cl were included. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
